A ROOM REFRESH. A DIFFERENT FEEL.

Choose the colour in the room it will live in

The same paint sample can feel warm beside one floor and flat beside another. Before committing to a Holland Park room scheme, gather the furniture and fabrics that will stay. They are more useful reference points than a perfectly coordinated photograph of somebody else's room.

Right Build offers interior and exterior painting, wallpapering and preparation for residential and commercial properties. You can discuss a selective refresh or broader decoration at a no-obligation survey. Bring the choices you are considering without feeling you need a fully resolved scheme before the existing surfaces have been assessed.

THE SCOPE, SURFACE BY SURFACE

A brief that takes in the whole envelope

A whole-room scheme can include more than its painted walls. Decide which of the following should change and which already works with the materials you are keeping.

Walls and ceilings

Emulsion painting and the assessment of old coatings before repainting.

Wallpaper

Removing existing paper or lining paper and hanging your chosen replacement.

Timber details

Doors, frames, architraves, skirting, window frames and sills, stair bannisters and handrails.

Preparation and associated finishes

Making good, plastering, coving repairs, and discussion of staining, varnishing or painting timber floors.

Exterior work

Masonry and joinery preparation and repairs, including any necessary scaffolding in the access discussion.

Commercial and rental properties

Office decoration, feature finishes and agreed end-of-tenancy painting.

FROM FIRST ENQUIRY TO FINAL DETAILS

How the decorating work comes together

Share the room's retained materials

Bring samples and photographs of the ceiling, joinery and materials you want to keep. Identify the features that should guide the scheme.

Survey the ceiling, walls and details

The survey considers the surfaces and their junctions before the written preparation and decorating scope is agreed with its quotation.

Prepare the adjoining surfaces

Confirm clearance of personal items and protection arrangements. Old coatings and damaged areas can then receive the preparation included in the agreed work.

Apply the agreed room scheme

The chosen ceiling, wall and timber finishes are applied in their planned stages, with suitable drying time for the relevant coatings or wallpaper.

Review the finish as a whole

Look at the overall room and the edges between its surfaces. Use the walkthrough to identify any finishing matters within the agreed decorative work.

THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

Assess the surface as well as the sample

Natural light can make old repairs and damaged edges particularly visible. Look across the wall and around frames as well as at the sample itself. Note cracks, loose coatings, staining and mould so the preparation is not reduced to a colour decision.

Wallpaper and loose-paint removal, making good, plastering or skimming and timber preparation can be discussed. Coving repair and damaged joinery can also be assessed. Agree what needs attention underneath the proposed finish, including areas normally hidden by curtains or large furniture.

PLANNING YOUR DECORATING WORK

Compare the palette over an ordinary day

Place samples near the floor, upholstery and curtains you intend to keep. Compare them in daylight and with the lamps used in the evening. If the room has a bright window and a darker corner, look at both rather than making the decision in one convenient spot.

Record the final product and finish references once chosen. Decide whether adjacent rooms should share elements of the palette and which existing surfaces should remain. Explain when the room can be cleared, and keep furniture deliveries or other work in the access discussion.

PLANNING A PROJECT IN HOLLAND PARK

Use the Holland Park boundary map

The council's conservation-area maps include Holland Park. Check the boundary and your particular property before proposed exterior changes, and resolve relevant requirements before confirming the finish.

I have had various work done by Petar and colleagues since last year and am always delighted with the work. This time he repaired and repainted water damaged ceilings in the flat I am going to sell and it is a brilliant job. Next time I hope he will do me a new kitchen! Such a "Find!!

Really great service from this team. Great consultation at the start of the project – didn’t feel like they were trying to rush through like other companies. Quote received in a couple of days; really good communication throughout as we went back and forth to book a date. Builder Ivan was lovely and very talented. He did an even better job than we expected AND the quote was bang on. Couldn’t recommend more.

BEFORE WE GET STARTED

A few useful answers

Where should I compare paint samples?

View them beside the retained floor, fabrics and furniture in the actual room. Check brighter and darker areas and compare daylight with your normal evening lighting.

Do I need a complete colour scheme before the survey?

No. Bring samples and identify the finishes you want to retain. Surface condition and preparation can be discussed while some decorative choices remain open.

Can existing joinery stay unchanged?

Make that intention explicit in the scope and view the wall samples beside it. State which frames, doors and skirting should stay rather than assuming a room repaint excludes them.

What if a sample makes old wall repairs more noticeable?

Point out the repairs during the assessment. Their condition and texture should be considered before the decorative finish is agreed.
