A ROOM REFRESH. A DIFFERENT FEEL.

Choose the finish for the way the room is used

A quiet bedroom wall and a busy passage are used differently, even if you want the same colour in both. Before selecting the paint for your Kensington property, discuss the appearance you want and the amount of handling or cleaning the surface is likely to receive.

Right Build offers painting and decorating for residential and commercial properties, from lighter refreshes to more extensive preparation. Bring your room uses into the survey as well as your colour samples. A no-obligation quotation can then describe the agreed preparation and products rather than rely on a vague request for a durable finish.

THE SCOPE, SURFACE BY SURFACE

Interior and exterior scope to consider

The scope should describe both the broad painted surfaces and the finer details around them. The following work can be considered without assuming every room needs every treatment.

Walls and ceilings

Emulsion painting, with old coatings and damaged areas considered before the new colour.

Wallpaper and lining paper

Stripping existing coverings and hanging the replacements you have chosen.

Interior timber

Doors, frames, architraves, skirting, window frames and sills, bannisters and handrails.

Associated preparation

Plastering, making good, coving repairs and assessment of damaged joinery; timber floor staining, varnishing or painting can also be discussed.

Exterior decorating

Preparation and repair of masonry and woodwork, including a discussion of necessary scaffolding.

Commercial and tenancy work

Office colour changes, feature finishes and agreed end-of-tenancy painting.

FROM FIRST ENQUIRY TO FINAL DETAILS

How the decorating work comes together

Describe the rooms' use

Explain handling and cleaning needs alongside the appearance and colour you want.

Assess and specify in writing

The survey informs preparation and the product-and-finish schedule before the quotation is agreed.

Prepare the underlying surfaces

Arrange clearance so agreed surfaces can be protected, cleaned and made good before coating.

Apply the chosen products

Use the agreed specification with suitable drying periods; discuss when rooms return to normal use.

Check the specified result

Review named surfaces and finishes against the schedule and identify any finishing matters.

THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

Assess condition before specifying the product

The chosen sheen should not be expected to repair the surface beneath it. Look for loose coatings, cracks and uneven repairs, and show the affected areas before a product is specified. Tell us about stains or mould and what you know about their history.

Preparation can include stripping wallpaper or old paint, making good damage, skimming or plastering, and cleaning and preparing timber. Doors, frames, windows and sills can be assessed for repair or replacement. Agree the preparation separately from the decorative preference for a matt or more reflective appearance.

PLANNING YOUR DECORATING WORK

Compare sheen and cleaning needs alongside colour

Compare the sample finish as well as the shade. If washability matters, ask about the characteristics of the particular product being considered rather than assuming a sheen name alone answers the question. Record the product, colour and intended surface in the schedule.

List the places where marks or regular cleaning are a concern and identify the quieter surfaces where appearance is the priority. You do not need one finish everywhere to keep a colour scheme coherent. Confirm the final choices before application and discuss drying stages before returning rooms to normal use.

Really great service from this team. Great consultation at the start of the project – didn’t feel like they were trying to rush through like other companies. Quote received in a couple of days; really good communication throughout as we went back and forth to book a date. Builder Ivan was lovely and very talented. He did an even better job than we expected AND the quote was bang on. Couldn’t recommend more.

BEFORE WE GET STARTED

A few useful answers

Is the colour reference enough to specify the paint?

Record the intended product and finish as well as the shade. The same colour choice does not by itself describe the appearance or performance you are asking for.

Does a sheen name alone tell me how washable paint is?

Discuss the characteristics of the particular product. Explain where marks or cleaning are a concern rather than assuming a general finish name answers every practical question.

Can one colour use different finishes in different rooms?

Make those choices explicit in the schedule. The room's use and the appearance you want can be considered while keeping a shared colour through the property.

Will a different finish conceal damaged plaster?

The surface still needs assessment. Cracks, loose coatings and uneven repairs should be discussed as preparation rather than left for a paint choice to resolve.
